Pricing trend of wheat, Onion, Potato & Tomato




  • There is a fluctuating trends in the price of wheat during study period (2016-18).
  • Further, There is an incresaing trend in the price of wheat from July to November.
  • For the year 2016 and 2017, the price of wheat started declining from January and continued to remain so till July.
  • During the year 2018, the price of wheat remained low during january, February, while from the month of March, there is an increasing trend till June. Further, a slight decline was noticed during July and started increasing from August onwards.





  • In 2018, highest price over MSP was in the on the of November and lowest was in the month of february. Farmers can plan their selling accordingly.



Wholesale Price of Wheat,Onion,Potato in Major Producing States

  • From January to August wholesale prices of wheat below MSP in the case of Uttar Pradesh and from August to December, the price of wheat are more than MSP. Hence, it is advised to store wheat during low orice and release the stock in a staggered manner for getting better prices.
  • Wholesale price of wheat in Uttar Pradesh remained lower by Rs. 300 less than the national average price during January to August month and remained higher than MSP for rest of the four months. However, the prices of wheat in Uttar Pradesh remained far below the national average.



  • In case of Punjab whole sale price of wheat has been remained near to MSP during first six month of the year. Thereafter slight increase has been found as compare to MSP. However, prices of wheat remained lower than the national average price throughout the year.




  • In case of Haryana price of wheat remained lower than MSP in the first four month of 2018. Thereafter prices, there was a fluctuation, but remained near to MSP. However, the prices of wheat in Haryana remained below the average wholesale prices at national level.




  • In case of Madhya Pradesh, wholesale price of wheat remained more than the MSP price throughout the year except January. After the month of May, wholesale price started increasing and remained so till December. In the month of march and July wholesale price was very close to national average price. A noticeable feature is from July onwards the trends in wholesale prices at national level and state level was same in 2018.




  • Wholesale price of wheat in Rajasthan is showing a continuously increasing trend from January to November. After the month of July wholesale price remained more than the national average price till December.
  • Noticeable feature of Rajasthan wholesale price of wheat is that the trends of wholesale price was same as the national average wholesale prices.




  • There is a fluctuating trend in the price of onion during study period(2016-18)
  • Price of onion fell down from January to April. Thereafter Price slowly started to increases till July.
  • In 2017, a very high increase in Prices of onion was recorded from October to December in 2017.
  • But in 2018, very sharp decline in price was observed during January to April.
  • Hence, it is advisable to store onion during February to May, because price remained low in this period and release the stock in a staggered manner for getting better prices.




  • Wholesale prices of Onion in Gujarat remained lower than national average wholesale prices.
  • Onion price was highest in the month of January and lowest in May and June.
  • A difference about Rs.750 to Rs. 1500 has been found throughout the year between Gujarat and national wholesale prices of onion.
  • Price trends of Onion in Gujarat was same as national wholesale price.




  • Wholesale price of onion was in the state of Haryana was higher during January and started declining till May. Thereafter, wholesale price of onion not fluctuated very much.
  • Lowest whole price of onion was in the month of May while highest in the month of January in Haryana.
  • Price in Haryana remained lower than the national average prices but trends was same as national wholesale price.




  • The trends of onion prices in Madhya Pradesh revealed that the prices were higher during January and February, but started declining from March and remained low during May to December.
  • The prices of onion in Madhya Pradesh remained far below the national average.
  • The trends in prices of onion at national level and that of Madhya Pradesh remained same for all the month during 2018.




  • In the case of Uttar Pradesh, the prices of onion remained higher during Jan-Feb, but declined from the month of March and remained low during May with a slight improvement in the month of July-Oct and was lowest during November.
  • Price trend in Uttar Pradesh is remained same as that of national average wholesale price of onion.




  • There is no definite pattern exhibited by price of potato across the month during 2016-18.
  • Prices of potato was lowest in the month of February and March for the all three years.
  • Prices of potato reached peak stage during September in the year 2016and 2018, However, during 2017 the prices remained low during this month.
  • Prices remain lowest in the month of January, February and March for all the year under the study.




  • In MP, potato prices remain relatively stable during April to November at Rs. 1000 per quintal in 2018.
  • Prices was lowest in the month of January.
  • The prices of potato were lower than the national average.




  • In 2018, Potato price in Haryana was less than Rs. 500 per quintal in January, but thereafter increasing trend has been recorded till October. Prices reached to about Rs. 1500 per quintal in October, thereafter again prices started declining.
  • Potato price remained lower than the national average prices. But the trends remained same as the national prices.




  • In Karnataka, Prices of potato remained higher than the national average prices throughout the year except September.
  • Prices was lowest in the month of February in 2018. But even at lowest prices was about Rs. 1100 per quintal which was higher as compared to other states.
  • Wholesale prices was highest in the month of June.




  • Price of potato in Assam was lowest in January and February about Rs 700 per quintal, thereafter started increasing till July reached at Rs. 1700 per quintal, from July to October prices remained almost same, thereafter prices again gone down in November and December.
  • Except February and September, the movement of prices remain almost same as national average wholesale prices.




  • Potato prices in Punjab has been very low throughout the year as compared to other major producing states. It was less than Rs. 500 per quintal in January, February and December.
  • Highest price was in the month of October. But the highest prices just Rs. 1000 per quintal.
  • The prices of potato in Punjab remained far below the national average prices.
  • The trends in the price of potato at national level and that of Punjab remained same for al, the month during 2018.




  • In 2018, Tomato price remain low as compare to 2016 and 2017 but prices remained relatively stable.
  • Prices of tomato was lowest in the month February and March for the all three years.
  • There is no definite pattern exhibited by prices of tomato across the month during 2016-2018.
  • Prices remained higher from June to August. In 2016- and 2018 prices remained during August and November, however during this period prices was highly fluctuated in 2017.




  • In Gujarat, Tomato price was remained low at Rs.500 per quintal during January to April but started increasing from till July, thereafter again sharply declined during July to September.
  • In the last four month of the year prices has been remained stable near about Rs. 750 per quintal.
  • In the most of the month prices of tomato remained far below the national average prices but trends remained same as national average.




  • The trends of tomato prices in Madhya Pradesh revealed that the prices were lower from February to April, it started to increase and reached peak stage in the month of July. From July prices continuously declined reached to lowest in December.
  • The prices of tomato in Madhya Pradesh remained far below the national average.
  • The trends in prices of onion at national level and that of Madhya Pradesh remanied same for all the month during 2018.




  • In case of Odisha, Prices of tomato was not stable throughout the year. During February, March and April price remained low. From April prices started to increase till July. Prices remained higher till December.
  • From January to April prices was lower than national average price and June to December remained higher than the national average prices.
  • The trends in the price of tomato follow the same trends as national average price.




  • In case of Uttar Pradesh, price declined from January to May, thereafter started to increase and reached the peak stage in July. From July prices declined till December.
  • A close look indicates that in September, October and November. Prices of tomato in Uttar Pradesh remained somewhat stable.
  • Price has been remained lower than the national average prices in most of the month.
  • The prices of tomato remained far below the national average prices during January to June.




  • Across the year a high fluctuation recorded in the price of tomato in West Bengal. Prices remained low during February to May. From May onwards prices started to increases reached at highest level among the all states at Rs. 2800 per quintal.
  • The prices of tomato remained far above the national average prices during July to December, while prices was below the national average from February to May.
